Although the fish hatchery is booming during the summer months, there are exciting and enjoyable events for the whole family throughout the entire year. Booth Day kicks off the summer season.

This event celebrates and honors the receipients of the Special Friends Award each year and is the official start of the summer season at the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery.

The Annual Garden Party Live and Silent Auction is the main fundraiser for the Booth Society each year. The event is held at the W.S. Tretheway Pavillion and features a delicious catered meal. Each year brings a new set of items up for silent and live auction. This is an excellent way to show your support for the Booth Society and ensure the continuation of the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery.

Hatchery Holidays is a celebration of the Christmas and Holiday season at the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery. A group known as the Christmas Ladies decorates the Booth House each year exquisitively. Luminaries line the path up to the house and throughout December there are chances to meet Santa and share some Christmas cookies on the porch of the Booth House. Local musicians contribute holiday music and be sure to stop in the Pond Shop to stock up on Christmas gifts.

Visitor Information

Established in 1896, D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives, formerly Spearfish National Fish Hatchery, is one of the oldest operating hatcheries in the country dedicated to fish culture and resource management.

The hatchery was constructed to propagate, stock, and establish trout populations in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming.  After a very successful fish production history, the hatchery ceased operations in the mid-80's and reopened with a new mission and partnerships to help preserve the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's historic and cultural heritage.  Visitors can tour the historic buildings during the summer season from May to October.

Booth Society Partners

The Booth Society was officially incorporated on April 11, 1989. The Society was created during the time period when the US Fish and Wildlife Service turned over management of the hatchery to the City of Spearfish in 1983. The City transferred management responsibility to the Society in 1989.

Today, the Booth Society operates under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and co-operates the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives along with support from partners; the City of Spearfish, South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks, and the American Fisheries Society Fish Culture Section.  (link pages to names)

The Booth Society manages visitor services, the volunteer program, educational and outreach programs, coordinates the South Dakota Junior Duck Stamp Program, coordinates special events and community outreach, manages retail sales, advocates for the hatchery, coordinates rentals in Ruby’s Garden, and supports Friends Groups nationally.  As a non-profit, citizen-based group, the Society relies on donations, sales, and City subsidy funding to promote to promote, preserve, and enhance the educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities at the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery.
